During the French Colonial period before WWII, there was considerable Catholic missionary activity in Vietnam. As a result, a significant portion of its population is Catholic today.

On another one of my forays into the countryside, I came upon a Roman Catholic Church in the midst of tar paper and tin shacks. The stark contrast between the Church and its squalid surroundings astounded me.
I remember being a little frightened while taking these pictures, because there weren't any Vietnamese around - usually a sign that VC were close by. I didn't go inside the Church or stay there very long at all. Seymour was greatly relieved.
