The Cherokee Civilization started 10,000 years ago in the Smoky Mountains on the banks of the Tuckaseegee River (white arrow). At its greatest expanse, the Cherokee Nation covered the present day states of Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia and Alabama (black outline). By 1791, European Colonists pushing West caused the Cherokees to shrink their territory (red outline).
