The Montagnard soldiers lived with their wives, children and parents. The whole family stayed close to their protective bunkers most of the time and for good reason. The North Vietnamese would randomly lob artillery shells into the camp as harassment. All that the children knew was what warfare brought to them. Their farmland and animals were frequently destroyed. And, at any time, their parents could be taken from them for use as North Vietnamese porters.
