Amazon River Exploration

The Motor Yacht Tucano

Mike Jr., Maryann and I spent a week in the Amazon River Basin of Brazil.  We explored the Rio Negro, the Amazon River's largest tributary, its backwaters, and native villages.  We took a number of hikes into the rain forest as well.

Our accommodations were quite lush for such a primitive area, in the river yacht Tucano.  We had air conditioned sleeping and dining facilities, full private bathrooms, and a wonderful menu of fresh, native cuisine.

Each day we took 4 trips led by native guides on motorized row boats.  Usually the first and last trips (before dawn and after sunset) were water searches for wildlife.  The other 2 trips took us on land mid-day to explore the rain forest and native settlements.
